South American Music Journey Workshop
Supported by LMCC’s Creative Engagement program, this interactive workshop invites participants to explore the meeting point between South American musical traditions, improvisation, and collective music-making.
Led by guitarist, composer, and teaching artist Horacio Martínez, participants discover rhythms such as huayno and chacarera through body percussion, call-and-response, movement, instrumental demonstrations, and ensemble playing. The workshop also introduces Andean instruments—including the quena, sikus, charango, and bombo—and explores the cultural roots, stories, and communities connected to these traditions.
Participants are also introduced to Horacio’s accessible number-based guitar method, designed to help students of different experience levels begin playing chords, rhythmic patterns, and songs on the guitar. Through this approach, participants develop coordination, listening skills, and musical confidence. The experience culminates in the collaborative creation and performance of an original piece, encouraging creativity, cultural exchange, and a strong sense of community.
Teaching Artist
Horacio Martínez has worked as a teaching artist for cultural and educational organizations across New York City, including Carnegie Hall's Big Note Little Note program, Boys' Club of New York, Casita Maria Center for Arts & Education, Saint Peter's Church, and community-based arts initiatives throughout the city. He is on the teaching artist roster for 2026/2027 in Midori and Friends and Belongo.
His teaching practice combines music performance, choir leadership, improvisation, composition, songwriting, storytelling, and cultural exploration, drawing from Latin American musical traditions, jazz, and contemporary music.
Horacio has taught students ranging from early childhood programs to teenagers and adults, leading instrumental ensembles, choirs, songwriting workshops, and creative music-making experiences that encourage creativity, collaboration, confidence, and self-expression through music.
